But what is coenzyme Q10?
It is a major component of cell membranes, while participating in aerobic cellular respiration.
Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is stored in the mitochondria (cells responsible for producing energy) in the form of a molecule called ATP.
Tissues with high energy requirements such as the heart, liver, skeletal muscle, contain a higher number of mitochondria within their cells.
The human body is able to synthesize a limited amount of coenzyme Q10 in the liver, however the rest must be taken from the diet, but it is very difficult to get from food sources in sufficient quantity.
Coenzyme Q10 levels decrease with age and are depleted by strenuous exercise or illness.
