Antioxidant action
Cinnamon fights the damage done to the body by free radicals, as it is full of antioxidants, such as polyphenols. In a study of the antioxidant activity among 26 spices, cinnamon was crowned champion, winning a place in superfoods such as garlic and oregano. It is really so strong that it is also used as a natural "preservative"!
Fights inflammation
The action of cinnamon against infections of the body is particularly important as it fights them and repairs the tissue. Inflammations, however, can cause problems in the body when they are chronic, but even here cinnamon helps thanks to its antioxidant properties.
Reduces the risk of heart disease
Heart disease, the most well-known and deadly disease, seems to have found its "teacher" in cinnamon. In people with type 2 diabetes, one gram of cinnamon a day has been shown to have beneficial properties as it lowers cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while HDL cholesterol remains stable.
Recently, a large study concluded that only 12 mg. per day, can have the above effects on the body. In this research, the so-called "good" cholesterol (HDL) was increased. Other animal studies have shown that cinnamon lowers blood pressure. All of these factors together significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
Helps those who are insulin sensitive
Insulin is one of our key hormones that activates our metabolism and gives us energy. It also carries sugar through the blood vessels to the cells. However, many are those who are insulin sensitive. This condition, called an insulin reaction, can cause serious illnesses such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
Cinnamon can reduce insulin sensitivity by allowing the hormone to do its job and lower blood sugar levels.
It lowers sugar and has anti-diabetic action
Ceylon cinnamon is also known for its action in lowering blood sugar. It lowers glucose after each meal in combination with digestive enzymes, which reduce the breakdown of carbohydrates. Cinnamon then acts on the cells as an insulin mimic. This results in improved glucose uptake by cells even though it acts much more slowly than insulin itself.
Dozens of studies have confirmed the antidiabetic effect of cinnamon, proving that it can reduce blood sugar levels by 10-29%. The appropriate dose is 1-6 grams per day (half with 2 teaspoons)
Cinnamon may be helpful in neurodegenerative diseases
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by progressive loss of cell structure or function. The two most common of these are Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Two elements found in cinnamon appear to inhibit the growth of the T protein responsible for Alzheimer's. In a study of Parkinson's mice, cinnamon helped protect neurons and motor function. However, more research is needed to determine the effect of cinnamon on these diseases.
Possibly protects against cancer
Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells in the body and cinnamon seems to be able to "slow down" its action according to research done in animals. It inhibits the growth of cancerous tumors and blood vessels in the tumors, causing the destruction of these cells. Studies in mice have shown that cinnamon can activate antioxidant enzymes and prevent the further growth of cancerous tumors. However, its anti-cancer action needs to be proven with more research.
It has antibacterial action
Cinnamon aldehyde, the main ingredient in cinnamon, can fight various types of infections. Cinnamon oil can cure respiratory infections, prevent the growth of bacteria such as listeria and salmonella, while cinnamon has been shown to maintain good oral hygiene and give us fresh breath.

The HIV virus gradually degrades our immune system and if left untreated, can lead to AIDS. Ceylon cinnamon has been shown in clinical trials to help fight HIV as scientists have found it to be more effective than 69 other plants with medicinal properties.
