Milk thistle, an herb that detoxifies the liver, is good in diets, in reducing sugar, but also as an antidote to poisoning.
The crushed seeds are used to treat conditions such as: addictions, alcoholism, mushroom poisoning, anorexia, bile problems, digestive disorders, fatty infiltration, headaches, hormonal imbalances, spasms, exposure to toxins, while it is known to act as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, purgative, detoxifying and cell regenerating.
Milk thistle is known mainly as an antidote in cases of mushroom poisoning. Many European Poison Control Centers use its extract for this reason (decrease in mortality from 30-50% to less than 10%).
Milk thistle has been used since Greco-Roman times, especially to support the liver and detoxify the blood. Since about 1890, pharmacies in the US dispensed the extract to treat congestion of the digestive organs with fatty infiltration. The German pharmacopoeia recognizes the seeds and titrated extracts of milk thistle as therapeutic for digestive disorders and organic damage from poisons and toxins, and as a supportive treatment in chronic inflammatory diseases and cirrhosis of the liver.
The active substance of milk thistle is silymarin which helps to regenerate damaged liver cells and large parts of tissues by activating protein synthesis in liver cells by increasing the activity of genetic material (DNA-RNA). At the same time, it protects the liver cells, preventing toxins from entering them and neutralizing toxins that have already entered.
According to many blind, controlled trials and clinical studies, milk thistle significantly helps to reduce organ damage from alcohol, while its long-term use seems to increase the life expectancy of patients with liver damage. It also favorably alters the levels of liver enzymes (transaminases) in patients with cirrhosis, viral hepatitis and fatty infiltration, improves symptoms of induced toxic organ damage (nausea, weakness, loss of appetite, fatigue and pain), while helping to prevent damage from chemical drugs. Additionally, it increases the flow of gastric juices that relieve indigestion and headaches associated with congestion of the detoxification organs.

The milk thistle has white marks on its leaves, which according to tradition were caused by the milk of the Virgin Mary. Hence its English name milk thistle or Mary thistle.
Pour 1-2 teaspoons into a cup of hot water for 7-10 minutes, strain and drink.
