The common name "salepi" refers to the powder that comes from the bulbs of a species of wild orchid that thrives in the mountainous regions of Greece.
A super drink to stimulate the body
Salep, whose scientific name is orchis, is used to stimulate patients during their recovery.

Salepi comes from drying and pulverizing the bulb of a plant, which was known many centuries ago in Hellas, but also in the wider area of the eastern Mediterranean, under the name Orchis (Orchis mascula, of the Orchid family). It was attributed aphrodisiac properties, which is why it passed into popular tradition as Sernikovotan. The herb that gave women male children! Indeed, if we succeed in extracting a whole plant from the Earth, then we will find that instead of a root, it bears two tubers of approximately the same size, which look like testicles.
The tubers are dried, ground and their powder is used to make this wonderful decoction, which "enlightens both the mouth and the soul", as the ancients used to say. And they knew with their simple wisdom that it also offers miraculous benefits to the body.
Today it is a drink that is coming back to the fore both for its exquisite taste and for its healing properties.
Components:
It contains arabin, tragacanth, a lot of starch and valuable mineral salts: phosphorus and calcium. It contains a sticky substance, Vassarin, which when boiled with water, gives this excellent emollient against coughs and all diseases of the chest, but also of the stomach and bowels.
Its heating properties are mainly due to the starch-glychrasma contained in the bulb, but it can be perfectly replaced by other natural starch-glychrasma materials, as we will see below, having the same effects on our body as well as the same indulgence as this which traditionally the salepi gives away. So, in the outbreak of seasonal viruses, salepi can be a weapon.
Its healing properties
These orchids and their healing properties were mentioned by Hippocrates, Asclepius, Theophrastus and even Galen, stressing the power of the sernico herb to stimulate the body of patients, to heal wounds of the stomach and intestines and also to relieve the intense cough.
Salep has healing properties because it contains the medicinal substances arabin and tragacanthin and a lot of starch which, when dissolved in water, create a liquid gel and sticky, it is considered suitable for the relief of cough, asthma and stomachache, it acts against dysentery and cough, while significantly stimulating the immune system.
Salep, due to its sticky nature, has a healing effect on the walls of the digestive tract. Heals ulcers in the stomach and intestine. Salepi is also a warming drink because of the spices it contains. For this reason it can be used to effectively warm us instead of tea or other beverages.
It is rich in starch and can give energy and mental clarity to people who need it, such as students, the elderly, and the sick. It contains valuable mineral salts such as phosphorus and calcium. It helps disease-weakened organisms recover and recover faster.
It contains a sticky substance, Vassarin, which when boiled with water, turns into a sticky thick substance, emollient, against cough and phlegm. Salepi, due to its sticky nature and its healing ingredients, affects the stomach and intestine by regenerating the walls of the digestive system.
Salepi has no special calories. Plain unsweetened salep has about 15 calories per serving.
